Ingredient Alert
There are so many CLEAN companies out there today doing an amazing job!! Yet, we should still be mindful to check a company’s ingredient lists! Just because a company proclaims they are clean, does not mean they actually ARE!
Some companies proclaim to be pure when in fact they are greenwashed!
Greenwashing is the process of conveying a false impression or providing misleading information about how a company’s products are more environmentally sound. Greenwashing is considered an unsubstantiated claim to deceive consumers into believing that a company’s products are environmentally friendly. (source)
I personally order from an array of companies to stock my home with clean products, but one company that I like to order a few products from use is Grove Collaborative. You can order some clean products HERE and receive a FREE 5 piece gift set! You should still do your research when ordering from wholesale companies as all products are not created equally.

Ingredient alert
One very simple and very common ingredient to look out for as you navigate through becoming a cleaner home is Petroleum. This ingredient is most commonly found in face moisturizers, body lotions, sunscreens, lip balms, lipsticks, baby oil and of course, petroleum jelly.
Petroleum is a by-product of crude oil. After Petroleum is processed and refined into gasoline, the useless, by-product is petroleum (aka petrolatum).
Right now, turn your lotion bottle around…..does it have petrolatum in it?
Since there is so much of it around and it is very cheap, the US skincare industry doesn’t seem to be in a hurry to get rid of it. The EU mandates that the full refining history of the petrolatum must be known and proven to be non-carcinogenic. The US, however, sets no requirements on refinement and carcinogens are often found remaining still in the petroleum by-product.
Some of the ways petroleum might appear on ingredients labels include:
- Mineral oil/ Mineral Jelly
- Petrolatum
- Liquid paraffin
- Paraffin oil/ Wax
- Propylene Glycol
The evidence surrounding petroleum based mineral oil, is overwhelming if you actually take the time to research it! There is strong evidence that mineral oil hydrocarbons are the greatest contaminant of the human body, amounting to approximately 1 gram per person!
Scientists have done numerous studies on women post delivery and actually found these contaminants in breast milk as well!
The scariest of the petroleum based substances is a 1,4 dioxane, an impurity found in 22 percent of all petroleum-based cosmetics. 1,4 dioxane is a known human and animal carcinogen.
Why does this matter?
According to Harvard School of Medicine, many toxic chemicals can be directly linked to children’s behavioral and developmental delays. If that doesn’t scream RESEARCH! I don’t know what will? (source)
